2. How is the city of Patterson, NJ described compared to Bani, DR? How can this be approached in a "transnational" sense?
3. What is the significance (if any) of Beli meeting "the gangster" at a club in DR called Hollywood?
4. At the end of Chapter 3, what does NYC (America in general) represent to the Dominicans?

ReplyDelete3. Diaz could have purposely named the club where Beli met the gangster "Hollywood". When I think of Hollywood I think of all the glitz and glamour associated with the famous but this is not all that comes to mind. I also think about the troubles and shocking stories that sometimes come to light about these privileged few.The gangster can almost be seen as one of these actors. In the exterior he looks quite flashy, for he was loaded and had plenty of cash. This is what attracted Beli to him, and being just a girl that wanted to have a life of her own to finally escape can't really be blamed. Behind it all though the gangster had a lot to hide. He had plenty of skeletons in his closet. His story is one of someone who came from rags to riches but paid a high price for all the things he had to do to be where he was. He certainly lived a privileged life, traveling and enjoy the finer thigns in life. Beli was just his hopeless fan.
